Since the day I started riding motorcycles, I had a strong addiction towards big BMW's. At that time I was a student and consequently those bikes where beyond my reach.
The decision to buy such a bike anyway was made in 1995 while attending a security training for motorcycles. I was participating with the XS400, and in my group was an owner with an R100RT.
In spite of being twice as heavy and bigger than my XS, the BMW could be maneuvered without any problems through the obstacle course. During a break I stepped up to the owner and asked him about his experience with his bike. His answer was quite simple: "Here are the keys, try for yourself"
My heart beat like a single cylinder engine floating the valves when I started the engine on the RT. How would I get this big thing out of its downhill parking place? But before I could worry more about it, I was already riding down the course. Everything was so much easier than with my XS400!?! Halfway down the course I fell in love with this bike! I had to get one as soon as possible. The first thing to do at home was to write an ad for the XS and the second was to start searching for an R100RT.

Two weeks later I sold the XS, and within two more weeks I found a dark green metallic, 1981, 65.000km R100RT at a dealer in Hamburg. In May 1995 I went for the first ride on my BMW! From that day on this became my definition of riding a motorcycle.
But even the R100RT was not safe from my passion to tinker with everything I own. I added an oil pressure and oil temperature gauge beside the clock and the voltmeter. I got an old Moto Guzzi top case, and build a frame to attach it to the standard luggage rack. The standard BMW (Krauser) suitcases are notorious for falling off the bike when they get old. So I modified the attachments with stainless steel brackets.

In other respects there is not so much to say about the BMW, except that it is still a real joy to ride. The odometer has now reached150,000 km. It needed new voltage regulator, and I have to replace most of the wiring because of corrosion. At the moment I lose more than 1,5 Volts over the wires between the battery and the terminal in the headlight shell.

Afterward, I will post photos in the details section.
