The URANIA doesn't fit into the group of bikes we already have. The reason may be that I did not buy it, but I received it for free only with the terms that is has to stay during the winters for display in the window of the driving school belonging to the previous owner.

The KI-120 is one of the many pre war bikes, that have been built in a bicycle factory. Engines used for these kind of bikes were from Sachs or ILO. These bikes couldn't deny their roots. They really looked more like a solid bicycle than a motorbike, and they all looked the same, no matter which brand (Sachs, Presto, Wanderer, Miele; Adler, Phänomen, Victoria, etc.) was written on the tank or frame.

URANIA means URANIA-Fahrradwerke (bicycle factory), Paul Tanner OHG Cottbus, founded this company in 1895. Beside a lot of different bicycles they started to build small motorbikes during the late nineteen thirties.
They had three types in their portfolio: The US98 for men and the US98 for women, and the KI-120. The difference between the US model and the KI was that the KI had a kick-start and not a foot pedal anymore. Both models were, at that time, free to ride, you did not need to pay tax nor did you need a driver's license for them.

Compared to brands like Victoria or Wanderer, URANIA bikes are quite rare now a days. They only built about 100 of the kickstart model, so it is even harder to find one of those. The year our KI-120 was build was an anniversary year for the company. They celebrated their 45th anniversary that year, and they gave our KI-120 a special anniversary design. This makes it even more difficult for me to restore the paint to it's original look. As you can see from the pictures there is not much left of the decal. The few fragments I found, show that the anniversary logo from the rear fender was also placed on the tank, but with different colors.

I will have a really hard time learning how the paint job and the logos looked for this particular bike. I could not find any good pictures or information about URANIA on the Internet or anywhere else.

This is why I like to raise the following request:
If you have any information like pictures, adverts, bikes or whatever from URANIA, please contact me. I can use all the help I can get to solve this puzzle! Send a mail to the webmaster, or use the contact form on the start page.

Thanks, Holger
